New city, new hobby!
I decided to sign up for salsa lessons for a couple of reasons. One, I miss dancing! Two, it'll be a way to meet people and three, it'll give me something to do on Sunday afternoons. So, on Sunday, I set off for my very first salsa lesson. I went to 511.org and carefully wrote down the instructions for getting there: the N-Judah to Duboce and Church and then get on the #22 heading to 20th/3rd Street. Well, as soon as I stepped off the N-Judah, I see the 22 and get on it. Well, this was the 22 going in the wrong direction..if I paid attention I would have noticed the headsign did not say 20th/3rd Street. Opps. By the time I realized my mistake and backtracked, I would have been over an hour late. Luckily, they have classes every night of the week in the city, so I went to the Monday night class yesterday.
So much fun! There were over 50 people there. First we lined up in rows and learned the basic step (quick-quick slow, quick-quick slow) and the basic turn. Then, we started doing them with partners. We switched partners often, so I easily danced with at least 20 guys. Some sketchy, some weird old men. I really enjoyed it. You do the basic step until the leader (the guy) gives you the hand signal to do a turn. Some guys made me spin every 8 beats, can we say dizzy? Its a great workout too!
I can't wait till my next class! From knowing nothing about salsa dancing to being able to dance to a whole song with a partner, I'll be somewhat decent by the end of the month. Now to find someone to hit up the salsa clubs with... I am going to go to one in Berkeley next Wednesday. I was going to go tomorrow, but I need to find better shoes to dance in and ones that will stay on my feet better. A new hobby and new shoes! : )
